   Home      Herniated Disk

Your backbone, or spine, is made up of 26 bones called vertebrae. In between them are soft disks filled with a jelly-like substance. When these discs are healthy, they act as shock absorbers for the spine and keep the spine flexible. A herniated disk, sometimes called a slipped disk or a ruptured disk, is a disk that slips out of place or ruptures. If it presses on a nerve, it can cause back pain or sciatica.

The most common signs and symptoms of a herniated disk are:

  • Sciatica — a radiating, aching pain, sometimes with tingling and numbness, that starts in your buttock and extends down the back or side of one leg
  • Pain, numbness or weakness in your lower back and one leg, or in your neck, shoulder, chest or arm
  • Low back pain or leg pain that worsens when you sit, cough or sneeze

Medications for relieving pain may include:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen or COX-2 inhibitors for pain relief
  • Narcotic pain medications for pain relief
  • Oral steroids to decrease inflammation for pain relief
  • Epidural injections to decrease inflammation for pain relief
These drugs only provide temporary pain relief and can sometimes cause adverse side effects.

Acupuncture, among the oldest healing practices in the world, is part of traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture can offer complete pain relief naturally with no adverse side effects. Acupuncture as a herniated disc treatment when performed as early as possible has been shown to rapidly improve recovery time and ease pain significantly. Acupuncture stimulates the damaged area of the spine creating naturally occurring steroids encouraging it to repair and producing valuably endorphins in the body. In this natural way the swelling is minimized and the pain of the herniated disc is eased. Often acupuncture is teamed with Chinese herbal remedies to assist in the recovery process.
