   Home      Hives

Urticaria, commonly known as hives, is a skin reaction that causes raised, red, itchy welts in sizes ranging from small spots to large blotches several inches in diameter. Hives usually cause itching, but may also burn or sting. In addition to the primary symptoms of itching, burning and stinging of the skin, symptoms may include fever, vomiting, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, stomachache, difficulty breathing, and pain sensations in the throat.  Nearly 20 percent of individuals experience hives. Angioedema is a related type of swelling that affects deeper layers in your skin, often around your eyes and lips.

Urticaria may be triggered by:

Certain foods.

Insect bites and stings.

Contact with an irritant, such as chemicals, latex.

Certain medications

Extremes of temperatures.

Water on the skin.

Conventional treatment is antihistamines, medications that reduce itching, swelling and other symptoms of histamine release. While these medical therapies can suppress symptoms they do not address the root cause of the condition and may result in adverse side effects. For those unable or unwilling to take medication for the treatment of hives, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can treat both the symptoms and underlying root cause of the condition. Acupuncture can effectively cure acute and chronic cases of hives and prevent cyclic reoccurrence.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine was being used for skin disorders as far back as 3 A.D. The goal of traditional Chinese medicine in treating urticaria consists of two things. One is to hopefully tackle the root problem and relieve the issue permanently, while the second alleviate the symptoms as fast as possible.
