   Home      Impotence
Nothing can be more frustrating for men than to suffer from a condition called impotence. Also known as erectile dysfunction, this condition refers mainly to the man’s inability to maintain, much worse to achieve an erection in order to engage in a sexual intercourse. Impotence affects about ten million men in the United States alone. By age 65, a quarter of North American men are impotent. The following common causes of impotence (erectile dysfunction) may include: Erectile dysfunction can be caused by emotional problems:
  • Worry
  • Fear
  • Stress
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Lack of interest in sex.
Erectile dysfunction can also have physical causes:
  • A side-effect from some medications, including meds for depression, heart disease, high blood pressure and epilepsy
  • An injury to the groin, or nerve damage
  • Illnesses including kidney or heart disease, or diabetes, can cause erectile dysfunction
  • A reduction in blood flow to the penis, common in men who have hardening of the arteries
  • Overuse or abuse of drugs including alcohol, tobacco and recreational drugs
  • A possible side-effect of some medical procedures, including prostate or urinary tract surgery
Western medicine normally treats impotence with phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors, like Viagra (Sildenafil). They work by blocking an enzyme that destroys nitric oxide a chemical in your bloodstream that allows you to get an erection by dilating the blood vessels in your penis, which increases the flow of blood during arousal. However, one of the major drawbacks attached to the drug is that it can cause a range of unpleasant side effects, including headaches, facial flushing, dizziness and indigestion. Viagra has been linked to an increased risk of raised blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, stroke and even sudden death in rare cases.

So if you happen to be one of them, you may consider seeking treatment of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine without the harmful side effects. Throughout Chinese history its society has been dominated by men. As this is an unfortunate reality it has also lead Chinese medicine to be able to focus its medical knowledge on treating men's health and longevity. As far back as the Yellow Emperor's reign many classical texts were devoted to increasing men's sexual performance and health. Although centuries have past since the Yellow Emperor began inquiring about health and wellness, men today still look for various ways to stay healthy sexually. Sexual health is not the only concern for men today. As men age they begin battling with various other male disorders. Aside from impotence, men also suffer from conditions affecting urination, the prostate and testicles. Traditional Chinese medicine has proven out to be very useful on different ailments including men health-related issues. Here is a brief list of male health problems that acupuncture & Chinese herbal medicine can help:
  • Premature Ejaculation
  • Low Sperm Count
  • Diminished Sperm Motility
  • Impotence
  • Hernias
  • Testicular Pain
  • Prostatitis
  • Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy
  • Male Climacteric (men-opause)
