   Home      Stress

Stress is a feeling that's created when we react to particular events. It's the body's way of rising to a challenge and preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina, and heightened alertness. We all experience varying levels of stress throughout our lives; at work, at home, driving in heavy traffic, on receiving bad news and countless other situations that cause us to worry, become frustrated or lose our cool. We are all different though in our response to these situations.

Traditional Chinese medicine is based on a holistic view in which the person is an integrated, interacting system of mind and body energies working in conjunction with (or against) its environment. Every living organism contains a life force Qi. Qi circulates throughout energy channels or meridians the main ones of which connect with our internal organs. Qi and blood, among other functions nourish, maintain and protect our bodies. Basically "perfect" health is regarded as the smooth and unobstructed flow of Qi and blood throughout the body. When Qi and blood flow are obstructed illness results.

In Chinese medicine, long-term stress tends to constrict the flow of Qi within the body. This constriction is often diagnosed as liver Qi stagnation. As the stagnation of Qi builds over time, individuals generally experience emotional difficulties, such as agitation, depression, and mood swings; digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and nausea; feelings of distension in the chest and abdomen; and menstrual disharmonies, including PMS, dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps) and irregular periods.

Generally treatment of stress aims to harmonize the liver and restore the free-flow of Qi and blood in the affected organs and energy meridians. Your treatment will be tailored to suit your particular condition according to the unique "patterns of disharmony". Through the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapies, traditional Chinese medicine can help to relieve stress and unwind its harmful effects your on health.
