   Home      Pain
Pain is a feeling triggered in the nervous system. It may be sharp or dull, off-and-on or steady, localized (such as back pain) or all over (such as muscle aches from the flu). Sometimes, pain alerts us to injuries and illnesses that need attention. Although pain usually goes away once the underlying problem is addressed, it can last for weeks, months, or even years. Chronic pain may be due to an ongoing condition (such as arthritis) or to abnormal activity in pain-sensing regions of the brain or the cause may not be known.

About 75 million U.S. residents suffer from acute or chronic pain every year and the effects of pain exact a tremendous cost on our country in health care costs, rehabilitation and lost worker productivity as well as the emotional and financial burden it places on patients and their families. The costs of unrelieved pain can result in longer hospital stays, increased rates of rehospitalization, increased outpatient visits, and decreased ability to function fully leading to lost income and insurance coverage. As such, patient's unrelieved chronic pain problems often result in an inability to work and maintain health insurance.

To relieve their pain, many people take over-the-counter medications—either acetaminophen or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Stronger medications, including NSAIDs in higher dosages and narcotics, are available by prescription only. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs only provide temporary pain relief.
Acupuncture, among the oldest healing practices in the world, is part of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the surface of the body. When these points are stimulated, beneficial physical and mental changes occur. Acupuncture is a very effective treatment for almost all kinds of pain conditions including, but not limited to, the following: migraines, neuralgia, neck pain, back pain, abdominal pain, knee pain, herniated disc, TMJ, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, frozen shoulder, shoulder pain, fibromyalgia, dysmenorrhea, osteoporosis, sports injury and other injuries, surgical pain and even cancer pain. No matter what types of pain you are experiencing, acupuncture can offer complete pain relief naturally and with no adverse side effects. The sooner the treatment begins, the quicker the pain relieves. If you would like to pursue this form of treatment or information, please contact Xiaoyan.
